Lauren Oliver's Writing Challenge
It has been far too long since I've posted a writing challenge. Blame it on post-tour exhaustion, lots of napping, and a decent amount of blowing off work to frolic in Prospect Park! But I'm back on the blog and I expect you to be back at your computers, too. This month's challenge is about—what else?—Summer Lovin.' Yes Your challenge is to complete a 200-250 word submission that begins with or incorporates the following sentence: “The first time I saw Kyle, I was standing in between the Dunk-A-Dunce booth and the Hoop Hop, wrestling with a gigantic stuffed panda bear. Not the best way to make a good first impression." Please note that Kyle might be either a girl's name or a boy's name. And the submission can focus on a romantic entanglement, or it can just explore the brand-new friendships that often seem to sprout around June and wither away by Labor Day.Get writing! I'll expect your submissions by June 18. Remember to send them to laurenoliverbooks at gmail dot com.And in the meantime…happy summering!

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance
In the past two years, Mclean Sweet has moved four times. At each stop, she assumes a new persona, but it never quite works. Whether she's an effervescent cheerleader or an intense drama queen, nothing can permanently dispel the turmoil and rage at her mother since her parents' divorce. Sarah Dessen's novel about a teenager and her restaurant manager father captures the vulnerability that young people often experience after the dissolution of their family. A compelling story; strong characterization; and with a touch of romance.
Can't wait to read them :)

Q. How many books do you read in a week? And in what format do you read them, or listen to them?
Well it all depends on my mood and how much school work I have, but usually I read maybe two or three books a week. Uusally it's hardback, but depending on how many pages it is I'll read it on my Nook Color :D.
"What book-to-movie adaption have you most liked? Which have you disliked?"
Book to Movie adaptation that I really liked most would be....Harry Potter :D. They did a wonderful and excellent job on the series/gave the book justice except the 6th movie kinda lol
The one I disliked the most..I want to say Twilight but Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief takes the cake when I left the movie theater I was pissed. I payed 7.50 to see Percy Jackson and the missing Beads instead of Percy Jackson and the Lightening Theif.

Q. The Blogger Apocalypse made me a little emotional. What is the most emotional scene in a book that you have read lately?
To tell you the truth I haven't read anything in a while, besides Tiger's curse but so I guess I'm going to have to say that the last book that made me tear up would have to be Anna and the French Kiss and it's been a while since i've read that haha, but I kinda teared up on City of Fallen Angels for some strange reason o.0. I thik it was because my favorite book series is going down the drain :(.
"Are you going to Book Expo America (BEA) and/or the Book Blogger Convention (BBC) this year?"
Sadly No, even though I really want to. Why I'm not going? Because I'm pretty sure my parent's wont let me go to New York :(. plus I don't have the funds sadly. Maybe next year if I'm lucky I'll go since I'll be in college with a job.

REVIEW: Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck
Title: Tiger's Curse
Author: Colleen Houck
Publisher: Splinter (Sterling Publishing)
Released Date: January 11,2011
Rating: 3/5
Passion. Fate. Loyalty.
Would you risk it all to change your destiny?
The last thing Kelsey Hayes thought she'd be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world.
But that's exactly what happened.
Face-to-face with dark forces, spell-binding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.
Tiger's Curse is the exciting first volume in an epic fantasy-romance that will leave you breathless and yearning for more.
Review:
This review maybe a little all over the place since I finished this last week and I just couldn't really get how I felt about this book into words so bare with me a little. Kelsey Hayes is a 18yr who is just getting out of high school and is looking for a summer job. Never knowing that, that summer job would lead her on a hunt over seas to India to break a 300 yr old curse. While facing plenty of traps, ancient curses and binding magic kelsey risks everything just to break the curse.
Tiger's Curse was a really interesting and enjoyable read. You have your ancient curse, ancient magic, handsome tiger/males (I don't want to call them a shapeshifter since it's a curse) and a lot of adventures. But this book was missing a lot that makes a book intriguing. Let's start with the main character Kelsey she was very plain, immature and she thought too much through out the book. It seems like every page was filled up with 2/3 of her thoughts than rather what's happening. The author seemed to have focused too much on her research than having more dialogue and action in the book. The rest of the characters such as Ren, Kishan, and Mr. Kadam I pretty much enjoyed They had humor and a personality, but kelsey she really didn't have any.
The desription of this book was well written and had a lot of details like I said before. I think she described India so well and chose beautiful places to describe that I felt like I was actually visiting India as I was reading. Like I said before I really with there was more dialogue and action, since majority of the book was filled with Kelsey's thoughts and also her daily routine. I didn't really understand why the author kept repeating Kelsey braiding her hair, going to the bathroom, sleeping, everytime she got the chance to and when it wasn't needed which is the main reason why besides Kelsey's lack of personality a 3/5.
Tiger's Curse was truly a pretty good book besides it's setbacks. It had a plot that wasn't the same as every paranormal book coming out now, it had alittle bit og humor but you don't really see much of it till the end of it, mostly and it was well researched. I really liked it. Will I read the next book, Tiger's Quest? I think I might, now that I've read the synopsis.
Quotes:
"Kelsey-"Perfect! Now we're being chased by hoards of monkeys! Perhaps you would care to name their species as we're attacked, just so I can appreciate the special traits of said monkey as it kills me!"
Ren- "At least when the monkeys are harassing you, you dont have any time to harass me!"
— Colleen Houck (Tiger's Curse)
"Just so you know, I hate camping. I'm not so much appreciating the fact that there's no bathroom out here. 'Nature calls' while walking in nature is on my list of least favorite things. You tigers, and men in general, have it so much easier than us girls."

"Summer is coming quickly - what 2011 summer release are you are most looking forward to?"
This is a really hard question.I'm looking frward to a lot of summer release's. hmm...I'm going to put two of them haha.
This thrilling sequel to the much-talked-about Nightshade begins just where it ended–Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemy, and she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer–one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack–and the man–she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.
A lot has changed in the six months since Evie escaped from the International Paranormal Containment Agency with her shape-shifter boyfriend, Lend. She finally has the blissfully normal life she’s always dreamed of, including:
1) A real live high school
2) A perfectly ordinary after-school job
3) Her very own locker (and by the way, rusted metal is every bit as awesome as she imagined)
But Evie’s not-so-normal past keeps creeping up on her...and things get pretty complicated when you factor in:
1) A centuries-old, seriously decaying vampire stalker
2) A crazy faerie ex-boyfriend who is the perpetual bearer of really bad news
3) A major battle brewing between the faerie courts where the prize in question happens to be...Evie herself.
So much for normal.
I can't wait to see what Evie gets herself into and I can't wait to see what happens to Calla.
If you were stocking your bomb shelter, what books would you HAVE to include if you only had space for ten?
1)Delirium by Lauren Oliver
2)Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead
3)Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
4)Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
5)One of Ellen Hopkins books. (I can't choose at the moment)
6)TTYL By Lauren Myracle
7)One of Cassandra Clare's book from the Mortal Instrument Series
8)Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Title: Misfit
Author: Jon Skovron
Publisher: Amulet
Release Date: August 2011
Jael Thompson has never really fit in. She’s changed schools too many times to count. The only family she’s ever known is her father, a bitter ex-priest who never lets her date and insists she attend the strictest Catholic school in Seattle. And her mother—well, she was a five thousand year old demon. That doesn’t exactly help.
But on her sixteenth birthday, her father gives her a present that brings about some unexpected changes. Some of the changes, like strange and wonderful powers and the cute skater boy with a knack for science, are awesome. But others, like the homicidal demon seeking revenge on her family? Not so much.
Steeped in mythology, this is an epic tale of a heroine who balances old world with new, science with magic, and the terrifying depths of the underworld with the ordinary halls of high school

"If you find a book you love, do you hunt down other books by the same author?"
Sometimes I do sometimes I don't. It all depends on what the story line of the author's other books are. Take for example Holly Black and Casandra Clare. I first books I've read of Holly Black's was Ironside which I loved and since I loved that series I decided to read White Cat since it sounded different and interesting but it turned out to be okay not amazing or anything. Also Cassandra Clare's Mortal instruments series which I love also even though I think it's going a bit down hill with the th book I loved her Prequel, The Infernal Devices series.
What is on your current playlist right now?
Many songs and bands right now like:
Florence + The Machine
All Time Low's song Time Bomb
Adele

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publisher:McElderry Books (Simon and Schuster)
Release Date: April 5, 2011
Rating: 4/5
City of Fallen Angels takes place two months after the events of City of Glass. In it, a mysterious someone’s killing the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle and displaying their bodies around New York City in a manner designed to provoke hostility between Downworlders and Shadowhunters, leaving tensions running high in the city and disrupting Clary’s plan to lead as normal a life as she can — training to be a Shadowhunter, and pursuing her relationship with Jace. As Jace and Clary delve into the issue of the murdered Shadowhunters, they discover a mystery that has deeply personal consequences for them — consequences that may strengthen their relationship, or rip it apart forever. Meanwhile, internecine warfare among vampires is tearing the Downworld community apart, and only Simon — the Daylighter who everyone wants on their side — can decide the outcome; too bad he wants nothing to do with Downworld politics. Love, blood, betrayal and revenge: the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels.
Simon,Clary, and Jace are back and better than ever. Of course the series was originally suppose to be a trilogy, but instead is turned into a six book deal and of course I was one of those fans who were excited but also upset at the same time. If you say a book series is going to be a trilogy keep it at a trilogy. That's like JK Rowling saying she wants to write 5 more books to the Harry Potter Series, flat out ridiculous. Anywho I'm kind of glad she did a fourth book. In City of Fallen Angels you get a variety of point of views, but the most point of view you read in is Simon's since basically most of the plot is circled around him. There are some new characters, characters that you heard about but never met, and more involvement of old characters, which I absolutely loved. I loved almost everything about CoF from the details of where abouts, the writing, the characters just almost everything I loved, but there are somethings that I didn't love and some setbacks on the book.
I love romance and drama in books, but when the whole book is nothing but relationship problems rather than focusing on what the plot is all about you start to get annoyed and bored a little and want to skip over the relationship drama. The book like I kind of mentioned before was pretty well written and plotted out, but to me it felt like everything happened in an amount of two days instead of almost a week. Everything just happened so fast in the book everything just blurs together and your like wasn't this or that suppose to happen, but never did. Also (sorry for this spoiler, but everyone knew this was bound to happen) the book was kind of centered around the wedding of Clary's mom and Luke, but there was no wedding which means it's going to be in the next book, which a little bit agitates me since Clary was nagging Simon a lot about fixing his relationship problems before the wedding on Saturday.
Thus making the series one of the series i'm becoming skeptical about because there are a lot of details in the book I can sense that are going to be stretched out in the remaining books like Clary and Jace's I love you, but can't have you relationship, Simon being an untouchable and also an outcast, and a whole lot of stuff. Moving onto the dialogue, I always loved the character's witty banter going back and forth at each other but to me, I'm not sure if anyone else felt this way but it seemed a bit forced and everyonce in a while cheesy throughout the book. It didn't feel natural like it did when it was a trilogy, which basically goes back to why trilogys should stay a trilogy. Other than the minor things that I hope wont affect me from loving this series I loved CoF it was pretty much awesome. I forgot to mention you did a little deeper into why Isabelle acts the way she is and take a little peek into Maia's past also :D.
"I suppose you've always been amazing at this stuff."- Clary "I was born amazing." - Jace" — Cassandra Clare (City of Fallen Angels)
"You know, some people think Shadowhunters are just myths. Like mummies and genies." Kyle grinned at Jace. "Can you grant wishes?" "That depends," he (Jace) said. "Do you wish to be punched in the face?" — Cassandra Clare (City of Fallen Angels)
"Hearts are breakable," Isabelle said. "And I think even when you heal, you're never what you were before"." — Cassandra Clare (City of Fallen Angels)

Title: Zan-Gah

Publisher: EarthShaker Books
Rating: 3/5
Zan-Gah, seeking his lost twin brother in a savage prehistoric world, encounters adventure, suffering, conflict, captivity, and final victory. In three years hero passes from an uncertain boyhood to a tried and proven manhood and a position of leadership among his people. Themes include survival, brotherhood, cultures, gender roles, psychological trauma, and nature's wonders and terrors. This is the electronic version of Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure, which has been awarded Mom's Choice Gold Medal for Series, the Eric Hoffer Notable Book Award, and was a finalist for ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year
Review:
It's been a long time since I've read a book for audience younger than I am, especially a book that's a quick read. Zan-Gah tells a story about a boy who lives in the prehistoric times where to stay a live you must not be afraid because that is the quickest way to die. I must say even though I don't read books based in prehistoric times, Zan-Gah kept me insterested. He starts off by telling you about a hunt for the lion that killed a boy from his tribe which automatically captures your attention and all about how he lives and how the people who lived before him lived their life. Zan Gah is filled with action and adventure that anyone would enjoy from children to elders.
I love how the author doesn't use many big words making it easier for younger audience to understand what's happening and what certain things mean and how even though it's desciption on many things isn't much since it's written in third person, you can still imagine a boy with a spear and he gradually through the book grows. This book is an adventurous book for anyone of all ages :).

The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter
Author: Aimee Carter
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Releas Date: April 19, 2011
Rating: 3.5/5
It's always been just Kate and her mom--and now her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.
Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld--and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.
Kate is sure he's crazy--until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.
If she fails...Short Review:
Simply beautiful. I love Greek Mythology, just as much as the next person and when I first read the synopsis I just had to read it and I'm glad I did. I really absolutely enjoyed this book. Just everything about it from the characters, plot, and writing itself was awesome. I'm still Giddy from reading it :). The characters weren't all what expected. I loved them but I really wish there was more to her characters especially Henry, Ella, and Ava. You only get bits and pieces of them but not the whole thing, just only what makes a character, which is the basics. Some characters you don't really get the full detail of them until the last 50 or so pages, which felt a little rushed. Kate I really enjoyed, but I felt she was a bit too whiny, witty, a little funny, smart, and brave yes, but always expect a little more from everyone around her. That was the main reason it's a 3.5/5. Plus I always thought Hades to be, well what he's known for, a bad guy. Not the oh so charming, gentlemenm cute and patient guy I really enjoyed. The plot had a lot of twist and turns and a lot of small hints here and there letting you know something or someone is about to come or happen. With the ending though I kind of wasn't satisfied. I wanted more than just a simple ending. I wanted something that made me want to look forward to the next book or at least something that was shocking instead of a simple ending. It had some new stuff added to the greek mythology which I loved. To me and I'm pretty sure it's just me but it felt like it had a hint of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice feel to it on some parts. The Goddess Test was a romantic, enjoyable, and beautiful debut and I can't wait for the next book which comes out in 2012.
Note: Sorry this is a short and not thourough review. I went to see Beastly and it clouded my thoughts since I finished the book earlier this morning and didn't review it then :(.

"Who's your all-time favorite book villian?"
I really don't know who's my favorite Villain of all-time because when I read I pay very little attention to villains unless they do something that makes me say a comment out loud and make everyone look at me weird. BUt if I had to choose it would be The evil ruler in Hunger Games, Jace's "father" in Mortal instrument series, and the Edison Group in The Summoning book.

hmm...sometimes I wish I would have named it different, like Read Now Enjoy Later or something else, but I like my blog name even though it's kind of long because of the dots, but giving a blog or anything a name is like naming a child or pet. But unfortunately for everyone, something much older is stirring, something even Department 19 can't stand up against!

I loved these stories as a kid, and now that I am older, I enjoy the idea of revisiting them and thinking about what was going on "behind the scenes," so to speak. Why was the Beast all alone? How could Sleeping Beauty live happily ever after with a stranger. Stuff like that.
When it comes to love do you think society is stead on looks more than personality and if so what do you think might help change that?
I don't know if that is the case or not. It's definitely the case with some people. I wonder if, now that more and more people are meeting online, it makes people more likely to look past looks.
What are some hopes that you have for the future?
I hope to keep writing forever.
Are the cast for the upcoming film of your book Beastly exactly how you portrayed in your head?
Well, of course not. The characters in my head are in my head, and the producers of Beastly had to fill the roles with actual people who not only looked like the characters but could act like the characters and also, could carry a movie. They couldn't just find some random girl who looked like Lindy. To me, the changes are minimal. I've seen fans complaining that they didn't like the (usually because Vanessa Hudgens doesn't have red hair), and I think it is sweet that they are so loyal to the book. But I have to say I haven't seen any suggestions that would be better (Emma Stone, for example, is a frequent suggestion because she has auburn hair, but I really think she is just way too mature and tough to play Lindy -- she's playing an adult role in The Help). I think Vanessa has both Lindy's sweetness and intelligence, and that is more important than hair color. I do think Alex Pettyfer looks just like Kyle.
From all of the books you wrote what is one thing you hoped readers learned, received, or got out of reading your books?
I really just hope they enjoyed reading them and took something away from them. It would be different for every book, and every reader.
Thanks!
